SFA Open Bore Piling (Sectional Flight Auger)

SFA piling is a flexible and reliable foundation solution used across residential and commercial projects. Particularly suited to restricted access sites and low headroom environments, the method provides a practical way to install reinforced concrete piles where larger rigs or alternative piling systems may not be suitable.

At Capital Piling, we deliver SFA piling on projects of all sizes, tailoring each installation to suit site conditions, structural requirements and overall build demands.

Typical Applications for SFA Piling:

SFA piling is frequently selected where access, machine size, or site constraints influence foundation design:

Domestic house extensions and residential builds

Basement and below-ground structures

Sites with restricted headroom or low access

Commercial developments in confined spaces

Variable ground conditions requiring sectional drilling

Is SFA Open Bore Piling Right for Your Project?

SFA piling may be the right choice if your site has limited access, low headroom or surrounding structures that restrict the use of larger continuous flight auger rigs. It is also well suited to projects requiring a low-vibration solution in residential or sensitive locations.

Our team will review your ground investigation report, structural requirements and site conditions to determine whether Sectional Flight Auger piling is the most appropriate foundation method for your project.

What is SFA Open Bore Piling?

Sectional Flight Auger piling is an open bore piling technique that uses sectional auger lengths to drill to the required depth. Once the bore is formed, concrete and reinforced steel cages are installed to form a structurally sound pile.

This method is commonly used where access is limited, work height is restricted, or ground conditions are unstable, providing a reliable foundation solution across a wide range of projects.

Why Choose SFA Open Bore Piling?

SFA (Sectional Flight Auger) piling is a reliable and adaptable foundation solution, particularly suited to sites with restricted access or limited headroom. Using sectional auger flights allows installation in areas where larger continuous rigs cannot operate, while still delivering strong, load-bearing reinforced concrete piles.

Sectional Flight Auger piling offers several practical and technical advantages:

Suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial projects

Ideal for restricted access and low headroom sites

Controlled installation with reduced vibration

Flexible pile depths and diameters to suit ground conditions

Proven performance across small and large developments

How SFA Open Bore Piling Is Installed

Site Review & Design Input

Ground investigation data, structural loads and access constraints are reviewed to confirm pile design and layout.

Pile Installation

Auger sections are connected and drilled progressively to the required depth with controlled installation.

Reinforcement & Concreting

Concrete is placed into the open bore and the reinforcement cage is installed in accordance with the design, forming the pile in situ.

Completion & Handover

Reinforcement is installed to specification and installation records are provided on completion.

Ground Beams & RC Slabs

Mini piling can be delivered to suit your project scope and stage:

Mini piling only – where ground beams or slabs are provided separately

Mini piling with RC ground beams and/or RC slabs – a fully coordinated package

RC ground beams and RC slabs only – where piling has already been completed

This flexibility allows us to integrate seamlessly with existing teams or deliver a complete foundation solution under a single contract.
