Located within an established residential setting, the scheme required a controlled and low-vibration piling solution suitable for works in proximity to existing structures. Steel Cased Driven piling was selected due to its proven performance characteristics, including low ground-borne vibration and reliable load transfer in variable ground conditions.
The piles were installed to an average design depth of approximately 6 metres, forming the primary structural support for the proposed build. A 250mm thick reinforced concrete raft was then constructed across 54m², distributing loads effectively across the pile network.
Anti-heave precautions were incorporated within the raft design (excluding the porch area), providing additional resilience against ground movement and ensuring long-term structural stability.

About the Project
Capital Piling was appointed to deliver a piled foundation solution at Elm Cottage, Calcot Park, Reading, Berkshire.
The scope comprised the installation of 15 No. 220mm diameter Steel Cased Driven (SCD) piles together with the construction of a 54m² reinforced concrete raft slab, forming a complete and structurally integrated foundation system.
Full engineering design was provided for both the piling works and the reinforced concrete raft, ensuring compliance with structural and Building Control requirements.
